The FiRa® Consortium has established an internationally available certification program that defines processes that verify candidate devices conform to FiRa requirements and test specifications. Issuance of a FiRa Certified™ logo assures that a product has undergone a rigorous testing process based on FiRa industry standards.

The FiRa Certified logo will be available for use by FiRa Consortium members who have devices that fulfill the criteria of the certification program.

Overview and Benefits of the FiRa Certification Program

  • The certification program is operated by an independent certification authority that ensures transparency and high quality, including the resolution of any certification issues.
  • The certification process organizes releases, grace periods, and the scope for each release.
  • FiRa Validated Test Tools have completed all test platform requirements based on the use of state-of-the-art validation processes and policies.
  • FiRa’s Authorized Test Laboratories (ATLs) offer independent, high-quality testing services using FiRa Validated Test Tools.
  • Test case development and maintenance are included in the certification program.

Certification Paths for Devices

FiRa offers different certification paths for devices:

  • Initial certification requires testing for all supported features.
  • Certification inheritance allows the reuse of test case results from a previous device certification.
  • Certification rebranding is used when only the name of a certified device changes; no additional testing is required.

FiRa Certification and Device Architecture

Core certification consists of two parts: conformance testing and interoperability testing.

The Core certification program covers the testing of functionalities located in the ultra-wideband (UWB) subsystem layer as illustrated in the FiRa device architecture as shown in Figure 1 below. It consists of three different layers:

  • The UWB Subsystem (UWBS) consists of physical (PHY), media access control (MAC), and the link layer
  • The FiRa Framework which is interconnected via the UCI Interface
  • The FiRa application

Core certification validates the following parts of the UWBS layer: PHY and MAC layers as highlighted in green in Figure 1 below.

Core Certification Program for UWB Subsystem (UWBS)

With the introduction of Certification Release 2.0, FiRa now offers feature set certification. All features in the initial Certification Release 1.0 are fully available in 2.0.

A feature set is a combination of a feature component and one or more device roles. Depending on the targeted use case, a device can claim conformance with at least one of the below feature components:

  • Time-schedule-based Two-Way Ranging (TWR)
  • Contention-based ranging using TWR
  • One-Way Ranging Downlink Time Difference of Arrival (OWR DL DToA)
  • One-Way Ranging Angle of Arrival measurement (OWR AoA)

Depending on the chosen feature component, a product may claim to support different device roles, which results in the feature set aimed for certification.

Certification Release 2.0 enables certification for the following main optional features as listed below:

  • Non-deferred mode for Double-Sided Two-Way Ranging (DS TWR)
  • Data transfer with ranging
  • Dynamic Scrambled Timestamp Sequence (STS)
  • Provisioned STS

A complete list of features is available to FiRa members using the Certification Management System.
